RV Park Proposal Approved by Omaha Planning Board

RV Park Proposal Approved by Omaha Planning Board

The Omaha Planning Board unanimously approved a proposed RV park southeast of 234th and Center/Highway 92 along the Elkhorn River. Despite concerns about flooding and traffic, the board and Planning Department staff cited a similar project that had no opposition and met all requirements as a precedent for approval.

Concerns Raised

Troy Meyerson, a lawyer representing the nearby Sanctuary Home Owners Association, presented a petition signed by 63 people living nearby. The main concerns focused on the potential for flooding and increased traffic in the area.

Flooding Risks

The proposed RV park is located in a floodplain, which has raised concerns among officials. John Winkler, the general manager of the Papio Missouri River Natural Resources District, stated that his agency typically opposes developments in floodplains due to the rapid and dangerous nature of floods. He mentioned previous instances where parks had to be evacuated in the middle of the night, emphasizing the need for caution.

Despite these concerns, John Walvoord, one of the landowners, expressed confidence in their ability to manage potential flooding and evacuate in time. He highlighted the demand for recreational facilities in the area and the desire to provide a steady income through the RV park.

Traffic Safety

Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson shared concerns about the impact of increased traffic on the two-lane highway, particularly with slow-moving campers. He warned that approving the RV park could lead to more accidents and even fatalities. Hanson expressed his wish for better infrastructure to support such developments.

A representative from public works acknowledged that the proposal would result in slightly more traffic but stated that it would not require a study. The planning board’s approval will now be reviewed by the city council.
